We use our barrels to achieve balance and to bring out the natural character of La Rioja’s local grape varieties, in particular the friendly Tempranillo.
Each barrel is selected to match the style of wine we want to craft and stays with us for a maximum of eight years. We use older barrels and those made from North American oak to elaborate the softer wines from our collection. Our more robust wines, Reserva and Gran Reserva, have proven to age best in new barrels or those made from French oak.
One of the most differentiating aspects of our barrels is that we store them underground. Harking back to the early winemaking traditions of La Rioja, when wine was aged and conserved in holes in the ground, Marqués del Puerto is one of the few wineries in La Rioja to age all of its Crianza and Reserva wines underground, where optimum temperatures and humidity levels – around 80% – are naturally maintained. This is why our wines age with such natural character.
